Chapter 1 - The Comfort of Us

The morning sunlight poured into the living room, painting the furniture in soft golden hues. Vanshika sat on the sofa, her laptop resting on her lap. Her right leg was stretched straight in front of her, the other bent carefully — her leg couldn’t fold completely, but she had learned to adjust. Her fingers flew over the keyboard, completely immersed in her work.
Sunita flipped pancakes in the kitchen, humming a tune, while Vikram sipped his morning coffee, glancing at Vanshika with quiet pride. Abhinav, ever the mischievous younger brother, had already snatched a chocolate from the jar and was grinning from behind his hand. “Di,” he whispered, “save me some of those pancakes before Maaji steals them.”
Maaji, knitting in her usual chair, didn’t look up. “Vanshika,” she said sharply, “at your age, sitting here all day with that leg… when will you even think about marriage? Do you expect someone to marry you like this?”
Vanshika froze, biting her lip. “Maaji… I’m fine, really,” she said softly.
Abhinav’s eyes narrowed, and he leaned toward her. “Di, ignore her. You know you’re amazing. Don’t let her words get to you.”
Krishnansh, leaning against the doorframe, stepped forward. His dark eyes were serious, yet carried that teasing glint Vanshika had come to know so well. “Maaji,” he said, voice low but firm, “Anshi isn’t just worth someone’s love… she deserves it. And if no one else has the sense to see that, I’ll make sure she’s never without it. Ever.”
Vanshika’s cheeks flamed. The words weren’t just protective—they carried an unspoken promise. She looked down, trying to hide the rapid beating of her heart.
Abhinav nudged her. “Di… did you hear that? Krishnansh Bhaiya just… wow.”
Krishnansh gave her a small wink. “And Anshi,” he whispered, so only she could hear, “remember — I don’t give second chances when it comes to protecting my favorite person.”
Vanshika hid her smile behind her laptop, chest tightening with warmth.
Her mother intervened, “Maaji, maybe that’s enough. Vanshika is doing wonderfully — her focus, her career, everything. Isn’t that what matters?”
Maaji muttered under her breath but said no more.

Breakfast began, full of laughter and playful chaos. Vanshika carefully adjusted herself on the sofa while Krishnansh poured orange juice.
“CA Sahiba,” he teased, “you’re working too hard. I might have to distract you more often.”
Vanshika rolled her eyes. “Oh please, Ansh. Distract me from what? Your ego?”
Abhinav snorted. “Di, you know he’s flirting. And Krishnansh Bhaiya, behave a little!”
Krishnansh leaned closer, voice playful. “Flirting? Maybe. But I call it keeping my favorite genius in line. You’re welcome, Anshi.”
Vanshika blushed. “Ansh, you’re impossible.”
“Exactly,” he said, smirking. “Impossible… just like you make me feel when you ignore me for work, CA Sahiba.”
Abhinav shook his head, amused. “Di, you’ve got Krishnansh Bhaiya teasing you like a pro.”
Her mother called, “Vanshika, don’t forget your interview applications!”
“Right, Ma,” Vanshika said, sighing. “Almost done, just a few more clicks.”
Krishnansh leaned slightly over her shoulder, whispering, “Careful, Anshi. Don’t work too hard without me noticing. I might have to remind you to take breaks… in creative ways.”
Vanshika’s fingers brushed his hand as she adjusted her laptop, heart racing. “Ansh…” she whispered, hiding her smile.
Abhinav walked by, rolling his eyes. “Di, I swear Krishnansh Bhaiya is worse than a puppy sometimes. Can’t even leave you alone for a second.”
Krishnansh gave him a playful glare. “Krishnansh Bhaiya likes to take care of his favorite person. Got a problem with that, Abhi?”
Vanshika’s heart fluttered. In these moments — playful teasing, gentle care, protective gestures — she felt safe, cherished, and… happy.
And for the first time in a long while, she allowed herself a tiny hope: maybe love wasn’t impossible. Maybe it was just waiting… for the right Ansh.
